Natural remedy for insect bites
« on: October 01, 2010, 09:56:02 am »
I got bitten by something the other night - not quite sure what (suspect it may be a spider bite but no way of being certain).

Yesterday my leg had a red bump on it which was a bit itchy. Today the bump was way way bigger and also pretty painful. I decided that before going to a doctor I would try some home remedies.

I googled and found many. But the one I tried was putting a mix of bicarbonate of soda and salt (dampened with some water) over the bite. I bandaged it on and left it for about 30 minutes. When I took it off, all the swelling was down and the red area was now just by the bite and not a huge area of my leg. The remedy I found was actually baking soda, salt and water. But I didn't have baking soda so decided that since it's for drawing, the bicarb should work well enough. And the salt is the disinfectant.

And I reapplied it and am changing the dressing regularly (just in case).

Apparently this also helps with bee stings after you've removed the sting.

I thought I would share it with you as most people have these ingredients in their kitchen.

Thanks SD for this post but please, do not mess around with spider bites (even though you have solved the problem) unless you know what bit you. Other kitchen-cure for insect bites is meat tenderiser. Dampen (in emergencies I have used spit) with a few drop of water and apply to bite for a minute or two.
