Council ban on atheist websites

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/7530519.stm

Lawyers at the National Secular Society said the move by Birmingham City Council was "discriminatory" and they would consider legal action.

The rules also ban sites that promote witchcraft, the paranormal, sexual deviancy and criminal activity.

“When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

Considering it's an internet connection at a workplace, the people in charge can block whatever they want to block and get away with it, the fact that they specifically say they are blocking access to sites containing information related to a certain group of people is discrimination.
Guess they'll have to ban / unban all religious related sites in order to not discriminate against any group of people.

I don't have issues with companies blocking non-work sites but blatant discrimination like that is just wrong

My work tends to block non work stuff - especially relating to stuff like sports, e-mail, anything on geocity and anything they think will keep people out of work for hours or that has offensive stuff on it (porn, etc.). That is perfectly understandable.

Religious sites of all type (Christian, Atheist & Pagan) are all permitted.

I think I'm very lucky, my boss haven't banned anything yet, but most of the time there simply isn't time to go on, say, wotr... too much bloody work!  :3':

Council ban on atheist websites

by Leon on 30th July, 2008 at 12:35 AM

This is incredible:

A city council has blocked its staff from looking at websites about atheism. Lawyers at the National Secular Society said the move by Birmingham City Council was “discriminatory” and they would consider legal action. The rules also ban sites that promote witchcraft, the paranormal, sexual deviancy and criminal activity.

The city council declined to comment on the possible legal action, but said the new system helped make it easier for managers to monitor staff web access.

The authority’s Bluecoat Software computer system allows staff to look at websites relating to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and other religions but blocks sites to do with “witchcraft or Satanism” and “occult practices, atheistic views, voodoo rituals or any other form of mysticism”.

So us atheists are no better than sexual deviants and Satanists according to Birmingham City Council?!
